Against the Current is an original mixed-media painting by Rita Irvin featuring a woman with her face lifted and eyes closed as koi rise around her through water and air. Deep blue and teal water contrasts with red, cream, and gold-colored fish, flowing black hair, and a layered background of cream, pale blue-gray, and gold-colored accents. An orange-red circle brings a warm focal point to the composition.

Flowers, fine linework, brush marks, and handwritten words are woven into the surface. The messages include “Even against the current I RISE!” and “Be still and know your strength is deeper than you think…”
