I started this one as a self-portrait, working from a photo of myself upside down, hair falling the way it does in the picture.

Once I started, fish moved in through the hair, and the portrait turned into water. It stopped being a picture of me somewhere in there.

About the Artist
Rita Irvin is a self-taught mixed-media artist raised in West Berlin, Germany. Her paintings work through memory, emotion, and transformation, built in layered textures and imagery. Influenced by Dalí, Frida Kahlo, and Georgia O'Keeffe, Rita developed her own visual language without formal training, shaped by years in interior design and a lifelong immersion in art and architecture. Each print is a signed, numbered limited edition, printed on archival paper from an original work by the artist.
